Rep. Case: Reevaluate Common Core roll-out

HARTFORD – State Rep. Jay Case (R-Winchester) today joined fellow House Republicans in demanding a reevaluation of Common Core standards and its implementation, which received no legislative backing and was forced upon Connecticut’s education system without proper democratic processes.
“I strongly feel as though our children need to learn and not worry so much about the testing that government is requiring. I hear day in and day out from teachers that want to teach and test when needed,” Rep. Case said. “We’re just asking for these standards to receive proper due diligence that they never received.”
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, his administration, and majority party leaders announced late Tuesday their intentions on slowing down the Common Core implementation – the announcement coming, coincidentally, on the heels of the House Republican proposal.
House Republican lawmakers said the legislature’s Education Committee should host a hearing and that all stakeholders – the State Board of Education, educators, parents and others should be invited. The lawmakers also called for a moratorium on spending to enact Common Core, including a $1 million public relations campaign, until after the hearing.
