Rep. Case pushes Malloy administration for Holabird bridge funding

HARTFORD – State Rep. Jay Case (R-63) on Thursday pursued more state funding for the Holabird Avenue bridge project in Winsted, calling on Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and his administration to allocate an additional $2.5 million on an imperative, nearly $5 million infrastructure venture which will directly benefit the town’s economy and public safety.
In a letter to the governor, the Office of Policy and Management Secretary Benjamin Barnes, and Department of Transportation Commissioner James P. Redeker, Rep. Case requested the release of additional funding to support the town’s decrepit bridge.
“Thousands of motorists travel over the bridge daily with the cluster of homes and local businesses in close proximity as well as Northwestern Connecticut Community College,” Rep. Case wrote in his two-page letter. “Also, one of the firehouses is located in this area and given the condition of the bridge makes it difficult for certain emergency vehicles to respond to calls on the other side of Holabird Avenue.”
“I would respectfully ask your help and the Bond Commission in allocating an additional 2.5 million dollars to complete funding for the project at its next meeting. This project would help revitalize our town and ensure students from the region can continue to travel to NWCCC in the most direct way for their education and professional growth that is vital to our state’s economic well-being,” he said.
The request comes on the heels of the State Bond Commission’s release of $2.4 million on Dec. 13 – a 49 percent investment of the entire project. Before work can begin on Holabird Avenue, the entire $4,862,954 estimated cost must be fully funded. While the town of Winchester was expected to pick up the remaining cost, local officials have been public with the town’s struggling fiscal shape.
“That’s why I’m here,” Rep. Case said. “I’m fighting for my constituents and making sure they get back everything they have poured into state funding over the years. It’s time it comes back to Winsted.”
