Rep. Case eyeing Winsted’s Holabird Avenue bridge work

WINCHESTER – Hoping to secure funding and gain support from the state’s transportation department, State Reps. Jay Case and David A. Scribner on Monday met with local and state administrators on the Holabird Avenue bridge here.
The two state legislators, flanked on either side by Winchester town officials and Connecticut Department of Transportation brass, believe they can leave a lasting impact on a crumbling street and a bridge that has fallen into some disrepair. Located on Winsted’s east end, and built following the flood of 1955, the Holabird Avenue bridge serves as a connector between busy Route 8 and Northwestern Regional High School No. 7; as an access route for the town’s fire department; and as a major thoroughfare for hundreds, if not thousands, of Winsted’s residents.
“What we’re trying to do is find money to improve this bridge,” Rep. Case, R-63, said Monday. “We know the economic climate in Connecticut is shaky, and we know the state is spending too much money. But I believe there’s a way to secure some already-appropriated funding and move forward with this much-needed infrastructure project. I wanted everyone to come together today so we can improve the lives of my constituents.”
Rep. Scribner, Assistant Minority Leader, is the longest serving leader and Ranking Member of both the Transportation Committee and Transportation Bonding, and has in depth knowledge and experience in crafting and funding state transportation projects. “I am pleased that Rep. Case invited me to join in the onsite discussion and survey of this critical transportation project,” he said. “Logistically it is imperative that the strength and future of this bridge, on a major artery be prioritized for the protection, and public safety of the thousands that it serves. The proximity to an emergency services facility, public schools, and a state community college elevate the importance of getting this project underway. Rep. Case is to be applauded for bringing all of the appropriate state and local officials together to focus on a strategy to get this project underway on behalf of the people he serves. I will do everything I can to assist in accomplishing that goal.”
The on-site meeting allowed for ConnDOT staff to review the current condition of the bridge, discuss the proposed design and construction intent, the project limits and phasing with town officials and WMC Consulting Engineers.
The bridge also connects the main road to an extension of Northwestern Connecticut Community College – a major source of traffic in Winsted.
