Housing Rehabilitation Grant Awarded to Torrington

TORRINGTON – Today a $400,000 grant has been awarded to the City of Torrington in order to continue its Housing Rehabilitation project. The money will go towards the construction of low and moderate-income housing said State Representative Jay Case (R-63).
The grant money stems from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Small Cities Program. The goal of the program is to provide important upgrades and improvements in our local communities. The grant money is administered through the state’s Department of Housing (DOH) by using funds federal funds allocated to Connecticut by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Ultimately, these grants are approved by the state legislature’s Appropriations, Housing and Planning & Development Committees.
“This grant is especially valuable to our community. Over the past several years, this program has assisted many homeowners to make significant repairs and improvements to their homes,” stated Torrington’s Mayor Elinor Carbone. “I greatly appreciate the support of Rep. Case and our state delegation and thank them for their advocacy on behalf of the City of Torrington”
“It’s great to see our tax payer money going to programs that support the true needs of the residents in Torrington,” said Rep. Case, who supported the measure when it came before the Appropriations Committee. “This grant money will help to correct deficiencies within our low and moderate-income housing such as ADA requirements, the elimination of lead based paint, electrical issues and building code upgrades.”
In total, 17 units in Torrington will be rehabilitated.
