Former Winsted lawmaker Groppo recognized in State House

HARTFORD – The House of Representatives today recognized John G. Groppo, a former state lawmaker from Winsted, using fond words and memories to express sympathies to his family members who were on hand during the process. Groppo passed away last year. He was 92.
Groppo represented the 63rd Assembly District from 1959 to 1985, climbing all the way to House Majority Leader during his tenure. From 1985 to 1987 he served as Commissioner of Revenue Services.
“Before he served our state, Johnny served our country. He earned a Purple Heart and joined thousands others in answering the call during World War II. We are so grateful for everything he did. I’m honored to be representing the district that he made proud for so long,” Rep. Jay Case (R-Winsted) said.
The resolution passed by the House detailed Groppo’s achievements and acknowledged his character. His death, the resolution reads, is “a profound loss to the General Assembly, his family and friends, the residents of the town of Winsted and the people of the State of Connecticut.”
Groppo’s family was on hand, seated in the historic Hall of the House, while current lawmakers thanked Groppo for his service and thanked his family for allowing him to serve. His family was recognized in the resolution.
“He was a great man,” Case said. “He will be missed.”
