Case, Witkos raise hundreds for local Salvation Army

TORRINGTON – Local Salvation Army donations received a boost Monday when two state lawmakers, partnering with the nonprofit and Wal-Mart, brought in nearly $400 in a one hour-period of bell ringing.

State Sen. Kevin Witkos and State Rep. Jay Case raised $196.74 outside the Torrington Wal-Mart on East Main Street, an amount the corporation matched dollar-for-dollar, in a partnership focused on serving struggling families and individuals who may have fallen on hard times. The Red Kettle Campaign donation, including Wal-Mart’s matching commitment, totaled $393.48.

“I want to thank everyone who came out to support the Red Kettle Campaign here in Torrington as well as those who work hard year round to provide services through the Salvation Army across Connecticut,” Witkos said. “The Salvation Army is an incredible organization that strives to feed, to clothe, to comfort, and to care. Each and every donation made to the Northwest Hills Salvation Army will support important programs that improve quality of life for those most in need. I am always happy to take part in this important and exciting fundraiser.”

People came from towns throughout the northwest corner to show their support for a tremendous organization, The Salvation Army. I cannot say enough about our neighbors and this organization who truly put others’ needs ahead of their own.”

The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign is a holiday tradition and it helps fund the Northwest Hills Center – headquartered in Torrington – and its Christmas dinner program.

The Northwest Hills Salvation Army serves the people in 11 area towns, villages and communities, including food pantry and food distribution services. It also provides children activities and human services.
