Through the collaboration of the local police department, State Representative Jay Case, the state’s Department of Consumer Protection and Joseph Palmeri, owner of Beacon Prescriptions located in Winsted, the drug disposal box has officially been opened for public use.
According to Rep. Case, the drug-take back initiative is extremely important because it provides an appropriate place to dispose of unwanted or unused prescription (controlled and non-controlled) and over-the-counter medications, ointments, patches, non-aerosol sprays, creams, vials and pet medications.
“The State of Connecticut experienced 697 opioid-related deaths in 2015, with that number expected to reach over 800 for the current year. I strongly encourage you to properly dispose of unused medication at the Winchester Police Department’s drug take-back box,” stated Rep. Case. “With the ever present opioid crisis, it is imperative that local authorities have as many options as possible to cut down on the access of excess prescription drugs.”
