Case Visits American School for the Deaf

West Hartford – State Representative Jay Case (R-Winsted)toured the American School (ASD) for the Deaf at their campus located in West Hartford. The school’s mission is to provide educational resources fordeaf and hard of hearing students across the state, and throughout the entire world. ASD provides day programming for students in pre-school, elementary, middle and high school, and also hosts a residential program.
“There is a vibrant culture at ASD that promotes a level playing field so that enrolled students can thrive in a positive learning environment. They are a great partner to the community, providing a unique resource to those in the immediate area. It is evident through the many different outreach events conducted by ASD that the message is clear, to provide better education and make resources more accessible for those who are deaf and hard of hearing,” said Rep. Case.
According to ASD, for nearly 35 years they have administered a birth-to-three program, providing statewide comprehensive home and community-based services for deaf and hard of hearing infants and children, from birth to age three, and their families. This program is guided by the central principle that each family and child is unique and that children can learn to communicate in a variety of ways. In addition, other programs offered include sign language and source interpretation.
Rep. Case went on to say, “As we put the budget together in Hartford, I will continue to advocate for prioritizing funding levels to our non-profits and providers that support our safety net. Making scarce resources harder to get for vulnerable populations is not how state government should function. I will continue to fight any misguided fiscal policy that diverts money away from the institutions that run our state’s residential and day programs.”
The legislature has until Wednesday, June 7thto put forth a state budget.
