Case, Superintendent Serio Testify in Support of Independent Town Academies

Hartford – State Representative Jay Case (R-63) joined The Gilbert School’s Superintendent, Dr. Anthony Serio, to testify before the legislature’s Education Committee on Monday morning at the Legislative Office Building. The Gilbert School, an independent town academy, is the designated high school for students living in the Town of Winchester. Additionally, The Gilbert School attracts and his home to students from around the globe.

According to Rep. Case, there is language in proposed Senate Bill 786: An Act Concerning Education Mandate Relief, that if passed could prove to be counterintuitive to the state’s independent town academies.

“The Gilbert School already fulfills most the requirements laid out within the bill, and has a functional means of communicating information to the public and Winchester Board of Education,” Case explained.

“The Gilbert School started its International Program to stabilize and reduce tuition costs, which it has successfully done for the Town of Winchester,” said Dr. Serio. “However, this language as written could actually restrict the potential of The Gilbert School, based on the broad effect it could have on other education statutes.”

The Education Committee has until Monday, March 27th to take further action on the proposal. Additionally, the committee does have the ability to make language changes prior to moving the bill along in the legislative process.
