HARTFORD — State Representative Jay Case (R-63) participated in a joint session Wednesday at the Capitol convening the 2016 Legislative Session.

“The state is facing a massive budget deficit that we must correct in the coming months. As a legislature, we must make these budget adjustments without increasing a financial burden on our taxpayers and municipalities,” noted Case in regard to his participation in today’s joint session. “It was also a pleasure introducing Winchester’s newly named Town Manager, Robert Geiger, who was able to join me in the chamber today.”

“I appreciated the opportunity to attend today’s session. I found it to be very informative, both in content and process,” said Robert Geiger, Town Manager of Winchester, “I certainly found it helpful to meet those legislators who support our town efforts to move forward both with our local processes and with financial support.”

Today’s opening ceremonies mark the beginning of the legislature’s “short session.” This three month session primarily focuses on bills related to budgetary, revenue and financial matters. Consequently, the General Assembly will be making adjustments to the state’s biennium budget. After a failed mitigation session in December, there remains a projected shortfall for next fiscal year of over $507 million, and for the out years the deficit projection exceeds $4 billion.

However, bills pertaining to other subject matter may be submitted by the legislature’s committees of cognizance.

Rep. Case will reprise his service on the General Assembly’s Appropriations, Internship, Environment, and Human Services committees, while continuing to co-chair the Intellectually and Developmentally Disabled (I/DD) caucus.

The 2016 session will adjourn on Wednesday, May 4th.
