HARTFORD – State Representative Jay Case (R-Winsted) participated in the ARC’s Family Hearing Day at the Legislative Office Building. The annual advocacy day started with a legislative breakfast, hosted by the CT Council on Developmental Disabilities, where lawmakers gave remarks on the importance of state services available and accessible to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
“This is an important event that’s held annually, allowing families and advocates to tell their stories,” said Case, who co-founded the legislature’s I/DD caucus. “We’ve made great progress in improving access to programs, especially within the last year, but there is room for improvement. We also heard about the importance of maintaining workforce opportunities for those with disabilities and ensuring there is quality support staff to help facilitate these programs.”
According to the ARC, this is the 9th annual Family Hearing Day. Participants of the hearing included Torrington’s Nicole Milo Cook, who was recently appointed to the Council on Developmental Services. Testimony given at the hearing will be provided to all members of the General Assembly.
The shorter session format is designed for the legislature to make adjustments to the two-year state budget. The call-to-action on Thursday was to maintain and expand funding levels, so members of the I/DD community can have the confidence that their programs will be there for them.
