HARTFORD – State Representative Jay Case (R-63) voted against a package of budget revisions passed by the legislature’s Appropriations Committee at a meeting held Wednesday afternoon.

“The budget revisions approved by the committee today do nothing in terms of long-term structural changes. This type of budget practice keeps the state in a perpetual deficit,” explained Rep. Case in regard to his opposition of the committee’s action on budget revisions. “We have forced our towns to lay out the difficult facts and create a budget based on shrinking revenue resources. We should be doing the same in Hartford for the state budget, instead of kicking the can down the road.”

According to Case, within the adjustment package there are massive cuts to the Education Cost Sharing (ECS) formula to municipalities across the state. However, ECS cuts and other line-items will be adjusted even further when the House of Representatives takes its action upon the revisions later in the legislative session.

“The adjustments passed at today’s meeting still leave a remaining $330 million deficit for next fiscal year,” concluded Case, “I could not support an unfinished product.”

The budget adjustment package was supported by the Appropriations Committee on party-line by a final vote tally of 33-24, with all Republican committee members voting no.
