TORRINGTON – State Rep. Jay Case (R-63) is helping a community-driven effort to encourage literacy and a passion for reading.
Case kicked off a 10-day citywide initiative Monday night with a reading of the first chapter of Marley: A Dog Like No Other by John Grogan, joining Sue Lubomski, director of curriculum, instruction, assessment and technology for Torrington’s pre-kindergarten through fifth grades. The One Town, One Book Initiative began during an open mic night at Bachi’s Ristorante and will conclude May 5 at WAPJ.
“Reading is fun,” Case said. “We hope this effort is encouraging to children and we hope they continue diving into books, magazines, newspapers and safe online content. The more someone reads, the more knowledge they’ll gain – and an informed citizen is the key to a quality democracy.”
While Case’s reading of the children’s book wasn’t broadcast live on WAPJ-FM, it will appear on Cablevision Channel 5 in upcoming days.
Other state lawmakers have signed up to read a chapter of the book, and joining them are prominent members of the greater Torrington community and local elected officials.
