Case joins House GOP in forcing Common Core public hearing

HARTFORD – State Rep. Jay Case (R-63) today joined fellow House Republican lawmakers in forcing majority Democrats to hold a public forum on the controversial implementation of the Common Core education standards – a plan that never received proper legislative vetting.
Fifty-one Republican lawmakers signed a petition requiring members of the Education Committee to hold a public hearing on Common Core, which has been a major point of concern for teachers and administrators, along with parents who see their children’s education being compromised. Democrats who control the Education Committee will now have to listen to the concerns they previously ignored.
“Today was a major victory for teachers, parents and the future of education in Connecticut,” Case said. “Once the education committee sees all the faces and hears all the concerns, then maybe they’ll take our citizens seriously.”
The public hearing’s date and time have yet to be scheduled. But two Republican proposals relating to analyzing Common Core and its faulty implementation will now make the agenda.
One Republican bill codifies the proposals brought forth by the committee created to establish teacher evaluation standards known as the Performance Evaluation Advisory Council.
The second bill, authored by state Rep. Marilyn Giuliano of Old Saybrook, would freeze the implementation of the Common Core curriculum until all stakeholders have time to examine its potential effects and consider possible changes.
