Case Applauds Passage of Sober Home Legislation

HARTFORD – The Public Health Committee has taken positive action on a bill that will create stronger definitions in regard to regulating Sober Homes. The lack of criteria dictating the operations of a Sober Home has caused many issues in the community, according to State Representative Jay Case (R-Winsted).
“At the state level, we have been looking at Sober Homes for a couple of years now. The framework surrounding their operations is not cut and dry and this bill is a step in the right direction to guide their operations under the purview of the Dept. of Mental Health and Addiction Services. It is imperative for those in recovery to be in an environment that is conducive to clean living. I applaud the membership of the Public Health Committee who voted in favor of this measure at today’s committee meeting,” explained Rep. Case.
Case has been a staunch advocate for a stronger framework on the operations of Sober Homes. He has participated in community round tables and plans to sign on to the bipartisan legislation that was passed out of committee today as a co-sponsor.
Rep. Case went on to say, “This is a nonpartisan issue brought forth by the committee. There is strong support from both sides of the aisle in order to work together and achieve a common goal. It is no secret that opioid abuse and related issues continue to plague the Northwest Corner. The time to act to prevent further deaths from occurring is now.”
The bill, H.B. 5149 AN ACT CONCERNING SOBER LIVING HOMES, now heads to the House Floor for further action. Case is hopeful that bill will be debated and voted upon prior to the conclusion of the current legislative session.
