veterans-Day-2012-jpg Did you ever wonder why Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11th? Originally observed as Armistice Day, it commemorates the end of World War I, which formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Hence, Veterans Day is observed on November 11th. Armistice Day became Veterans Day in 1954. Veterans Day recognizes and celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans.  This Veterans Day, I ask that we focus our attention on the true reason that November 11th is deemed a National holiday. Freedom is never free. It has always been earned, yet it's still so easily taken for granted. We must remember that the freedom we all enjoy today has been secured by the service of our veterans. Please join me in taking some time to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, as well as willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. I would also like to direct our veterans to the numerous discounts or free meals offered by companies and restaurants around the state on this day, and throughout the year. Please note that you will be required to provide proof of your military service through some form of a ID, like a Military ID Card (active/reserve/retired), VA ID card, Current Leave and Earnings Statement (LES), Drivers License with Veterans Designation, photograph in uniform, wearing your uniform (if your service permits), Veterans Organization Card (e.g., American Legion and VFW), DD Form 214, discharge paperwork, or another form of identification. Some restaurants and companies may go by the honor system, but I encourage you to call ahead and ask about their specific policies. Participating companies include:
