CROMWELL – On Wednesday, December 14, State Representative Vincent Candelora; Deputy House Republican Leader, State Representative Themis Klarides; House Republican Leader, and State Representative J.P. Sredzinski, Ranking Member of the legislature’s Public Safety Committee; accepted a 2017 Legislative Award from the CT Police Chiefs Association (CPCA) during the organization’s annual winter meeting at the Radisson Hotel in Cromwell. [caption id="attachment_84520" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Chief John Gavallas (Watertown, President of the CPCA), House Republican Leader Themis Klarides, State Rep. J. P. Sredzinski, State Rep. Vincent Candelora, Chief Paul Melanson (Farmington PD), Chief L.J. Fusaro (Groton Town PD), and Chief Scott Sansom (East Harford PD).[/caption] The CPCA Legislative Award is presented during an annual winter meeting, which includes a luncheon and mini expo with various police equipment. The award is given to legislators that have stood out amongst others and supported police issues. “We owe so much to our law enforcement officials. They dedicate their lives to keeping our families and communities safe from all distress, which is why it is so critical that our police officers and their efforts be supported,” Rep. Candelora said. “I am humbled by this award and will continue to do my best to advocate and assist our police officers and police departments.” “I am honored to be able to stand up for our men and women in uniform who every day put their lives on the line to protect all of ours,’’ Rep. Klarides said. “Too often the public loses sight of how much our sworn officers sacrifice to keep our streets safe and just how much they mean to civilized society.” “I am honored and humbled to have been recognized with my colleagues for our legislative work this session,” said Rep. JP Sredzinski. “The Connecticut Police Chiefs Association consists of the leaders of all municipal law enforcement throughout our state and the work they do keeps us all safe.  Helping them get their jobs done is an important aspect to my service as a State Representative.” During the 2017 legislative session Candelora, Klarides and Sredzinski were instrumental in blocking a bill that reduced officers’ ability to protect the public and one that would strip them of their constitutional rights. During debate on the House Floor, it was evident that the bill did not have the votes to pass and so it was not called for a vote.
