Rep. Candelora: Tax and Spend Increases, Smoke and Mirrors

We wrapped up the 2015 legislative session at midnight Wednesday, June 3. Normally there is a whirlwind of activity as the session closes, but this year much of it was slowed down because of the delayed budget vote. Democrats pushed through the second-largest tax increase in state history hours before we adjourned; Gov. Malloy is expected to sign it, even though he previously promised not to raise taxes. Through their budget, Gov. Malloy and the Democrats are again showing how out-of-touch they are with the rest of us down here in the real world. We are expecting a special one-day legislative session sometime this month to discuss a watered-down version of Gov. Malloy’s “Second Chance Society” proposal along with a budget “implementer” – where the $40 billion budget will be spent. The complete breakdown of the legislative process was the most disturbing part of this year’s legislative session.  One day after the legislature adopted the budget, residents awoke to corporate giants, such as General Electric and Aetna, threatening to leave the state. The fact that such negative news regarding Connecticut’s budget reached local, state, and national levels was certainly unprecedented. Thank you for your time.   Sincerely, Vincent Candelora State Representative 86th General Assembly District
