The Wallingford Delegation to the General Assembly has successfully won enterprise zone status for the tract of land containing the US Postal Service sorting and distribution center. Reps. Vincent Candelora, Mary Mushinsky, Mary Fritz and Al Adinolfi along with Sen. Len Fasano cooperated to include the request in the state budget implementer bill.
The measure grants reduced taxes for a 5 year period to any company that moves into the facility after the US Postal Service vacates the building. The federal USPS decided to close the regional facility which once supported 1,200 postal workers, after technology reduced the use of mail.
The Wallingford Delegation was forced to heighten their efforts or in turn sacrifice the enterprise zone after Candelora and Mushinsky encountered an initial setback in the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee. “We were put in a critical position where we had to work diligently to convince our colleagues that this helping hand was essential to this facility returning to tax-producing status,” Candelora said. “The maintained use of this building will now be added to the town’s Grand List and lower property taxes as well.”
This was passed within the implementer in the last few minutes of the 2014 session.
