During a Friday morning press conference the Connecticut House of Representatives along with Senate Republicans gave approval to a detailed two-year spending plan, which unlike Governor Dannel P. Malloy’s proposal, falls under that constitutional spending cap and addresses Connecticut’s immediate needs while responsibly planning for the future, Deputy House Republican Leader Vincent Candelora (R-86) said.
Entitled Blueprint for Prosperity, the Republican biennium budget plan restores funding to social and human services, limits long-term borrowing, consolidates a number of state commissions, and provides exemptions on clothing and shoes under $50 – all promises the governor made but was unable to fulfill.
“Our budget is under the spending cap and reforms taxes,” Candelora said. “Although we were dealt a difficult hand, we feel that we restored essential funding the governor cut and prioritized to ensure that our most vulnerable population is taken care of and our municipalities have the help they need.”
Republicans’ Blueprint reinstates the current funding levels for the resident state trooper program and phases out the income tax on pension income under $100,000 in an effort to halt the wave of seniors heading out of state. Blueprint also seeks to attract younger residents by eliminating the governor’s proposed income tax hike on single filers.
“This budget will help get Connecticut back on the road to recovery and path to prosperity,” added Candelora. “We have a responsibility to take care of our citizens and businesses, but we have to do so responsibly – this budget achieves that.”
