Reps. Bolinsky, Hovey and Carter Applaud Grant to Connect Newtown to State’s High Speed Internet Network

Expanding Availability of Internet Services Will Help Towns Achieve Cost Savings
HARTFORD –State Representatives Mitch Bolinsky (R-106), DebraLee Hovey (R-112) and Dan Carter (R-2) today applauded the announcement of a $55,080 grant to connect Newtown’s Municipal Center to the state’s Nutmeg Network computer infrastructure.
The Nutmeg Network is the state’s fiber-optic infrastructure that delivers reliable, high-speed internet access to its members throughout Connecticut. The program is already offered to schools, libraries and emergency services and including local municipalities will help to save money and expedite town services.
“Connecting the town offices to the state’s high-speed internet network will benefit Newtown through increased speed, efficiency and cost savings and I’m happy this grant came through,” Rep. Hovey said. “Investments like this are good for the people of Newtown and good for Connecticut.”
Rep Bolinsky said, “This grant will help Newtown join the state’s high-speed network, enhancing public and town access to an ever-increasing volume of business and information being conducted on-line. Pat Llodra’s team has already laid out the plans and are prepared to move forward to activation now that the grant has been awarded and announced. It’s a good day at the Municipal Center!”
“Connecting Newtown to the fastest Internet network available is great news for the town and will allow local officials to serve the residents faster and more efficiently than the great job they already do,” Rep. Carter said. “Infrastructure upgrades are sound investments in the future of our state.”
According to a statement from the Governor’s office, extending the use of the network was an initiative developed from Speaker of the House Brendan Sharkey’s MORE (Municipal Opportunities and Regional Efficiencies) Commission. That group, a bipartisan mix of state lawmakers, has been studying ways to encourage all levels of government to collaborate on initiatives that produce efficiencies and cost-savings while eliminating redundancy.
