Newtown, CT. – Ahead of their 100th anniversary celebration later this month, State Representatives Martin Foncello (R-107) and Mitch Bolinsky (R-106) joined command and staff members of the Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Department for their August monthly meeting. The state representatives presented a citation to leaders of the all-volunteer department marking the anniversary of the department’s founding in 1925.

“We wanted to recognize the past and present members of the department, whose professionalism, dedication and selfless service have protected the health and safety of the residents of Newtown and surrounding communities for a century,” said Rep. Foncello. “When people are experiencing some of the worst moments, whether it’s a fire, car accident or other emergency, these men and women show up for them and do what they can to make things a bit better.”

“For 100 years, the Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Department has stood as a symbol of courage, service, and community spirit. Their century of dedication is a testament to what it means to serve others selflessly, and we honor every volunteer—past and present—who answered the call,” said Rep. Bolinsky.

In May 1925, the residents organized the Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company, consisting of 26 members. Part of the Upham Food Products Garage was to be rebuilt into their firehouse, located in the very same location, to this day. The members began a subscription drive to build a firehouse, which later had to be rebuilt in 1937 because it was destroyed by a fire. Always at the ready, the volunteers of Hawleyville’s fire department are looking to a bright future, with plans for a new firehouse to protect and support the growing Hawleyville community for the next 100-years.

“The Department has consistently exemplified excellence in public services and emergency response, whether preserving life or protecting property from fire and other hazards. We extend a heartfelt thanks for a job well done. Congratulations and stay safe,” added Reps. Foncello and Bolinsky.

The Nonprofit Fire Department provides fire, emergency medical, and rescue services. They operate six pieces of apparatus and have 50 volunteers.
