HARTFORD – State Representative Mitch Bolinsky (R-106) participated in ARC Day on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at the State Capitol. Among those in attendance was Newtown native and self-advocate, Sydney Ohlin. Bolinsky welcomed Sydney, and her mother, Stacey Daves-Ohlin to the House of Representatives.

Rep. Bolinsky said, “Sydney has written to many of my legislative colleagues about the importance of the services provided by the Department of Developmental Services (DDS). I thought it would be important for all of those she has contacted to be able to meet her in person. I admire her tenacity in advocating for developmental services that are far too often on the chopping block during budget negotiations.”

In light of a projected $5 billion shortfall for the upcoming biennium, Ohlin is acutely aware of the issues affecting her, her friends, and others across the state that depend on DDS to be fully funded.

“Unfortunately, Sydney is not the only one who would be negatively affected if the proposed cuts were to go through with the final budget. It’s beyond time to make long-term changes that do not severe ties for those who comprise the state’s safety net. As a core function of state government, Sydney should not have to worry about the stability of her programs and services,” concluded Bolinsky.

During her trip to the Capitol, Sydney met with the House Republican Leader, Themis Klarides, House Majority Leader, Matthew Ritter, the Newtown Legislative Delegation, and several other elected officials to provide first-hand insight on the necessity of certain programs she participates in.
