    Along with sponsor AARP and The Connecticut Mirror, State Representatives Mitch Bolinsky & Cathy Abercrombie will be hosting a Google Hangout on Tuesday May 19th at 10:00 A.M. to discuss Connecticut’s aging population. The goal is to have a conversation that will help people understand the challenges caregivers face, what role state policy has in addressing them and the challenges lawmakers face in addressing these issues.

    One in seven residents is 75 or older, more than a quarter of the state is at least 55, and the 65-plus population is projected to grow by 64 percent by 2030.

    A study in 2009 found that 711,000 residents provided the equivalent of $5.8 billion in care to older relatives — roughly the same as Connecticut spends on Medicaid.Bottom of Form

    The topics to be covered are:

    • The number of caregivers;
    • The state’s aging population,
    • The needs of caregivers
    • The state’s reliance on unpaid caregivers for long-term care

    “I am looking forward to using this fairly modern technological format to connect with residents on the issues affecting seniors in our state,” said Representative Bolinsky, the ranking member of the Aging committee.  ”
