Bolinsky Testifies in Support of Greater LEO Protections

Hartford – State Rep. Mitch Bolinsky (R-Newtown) testified before the legislature’s Government Administration and Employees (GAE) Committee on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at the Legislative Office Building. Bolinsky spoke in support of his proposal, H.B. 5947 – AN ACT PROTECTING THE IDENTITY OF LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS.
“This proposal adds a level of protection for law enforcement officers and relatives with the same last name, living with them.” explained Bolinsky. “ This concept was brought to me by a couple of Newtown police officers to extend protections they have under current law, allowing a law enforcement officer (LEO) to conceal his or her Voter Registration information. The proposed, amended law would amend Title 9 of the general statutes to extend that protection to family members who share the same last name and live under the same roof.”
What this will accomplish will make it much more difficult to use Voter Registration to match an officer with his surname, affording greater privacy and personal security to participating LEOs and their families, reducing the chances of harassment or targeting. Bolinsky also referenced that, with today’s divisive political climate and a general increase in attacks on Law Enforcement, the timing of this added level of protection is right.
“The added privacy and peace of mind proposed in this concept will cost the taxpayers nothing, yet will serve as a valuable tool to assure our LEO’s have peace at home and peace of mind,” Bolinsky concluded.
The bill will be considered by the GAE committee over the coming days. After the committee’s consideration, the proposal may go to the House Floor for further debate.
