Bolinsky Supports Local Veterans Contact Assistant

HARTFORD- With more and more veterans in Connecticut, State Rep. Mitch Bolinsky (Newtown) supported a bill that requires cities and towns to appoint a veterans’ service contact.
The bill would have this person act as an ombudsman that could guide veterans to the appropriate local, state, or federal resources. Cities or towns that currently have a full time veteran’s representative or provide funding to have access to one would be exempt. The Department of Veterans’ Affairs will conduct a yearly training session that can be optionally attended by the designated veterans’ service contact personnel.
The bill also requires the Department of Veterans’ Affairs’ Veterans’ Advocacy and Assistance Unit to conduct a training course annually for such contact persons and requires the contact persons to complete that course.
During public hearing testimony, the Connecticut Department of Veteran Affairs supported this legislation and its intent to have each municipality to identify a veteran service contact and commits to providing training which would assist them in this program.
“With Connecticut’s heavy reliance on the citizen soldiers of the National Guard and Reserves, having a designated person as the point of contact at the local level would be a great help in improving the services to each town and city in the state.
“We must not forget the many veterans in need and some who require assistance through the maze of local and state programs,” said Rep. Bolinsky.
