Bolinsky: Rx Drug Take Back Day

The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs.
During the last decade Americans have turned in more than 4.1 million pounds—more than 2,100 tons—of pills.
This is important because it has been reported that 6.8 million Americans have abused prescription drugs in recent years and the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs has risen. Studies have revealed more than 54 percent of people who abuse prescription pain relievers obtained them through friends or relatives, a statistic that includes raiding the family medicine cabinet.
In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.
