HARTFORD- State Rep. Mitch Bolinsky (R-106) wants to remind Newtown residents and shoppers about the upcoming Sales Tax Free Week.

If you are planning on Back-to-School shopping, heads up! Beginning Aug. 16 through Aug. 22, articles of clothing or footwear under $100 will be sales tax free. The sales tax holiday is approaching, but the rules have changed. The state used to allow you to buy items under $300 without paying a sales tax but in the final budget passed by the majority party and signed by the governor the threshold was lowered essentially adding to the already heavy tax burden on hard-working families.

    Bolinsky opposed those tax hikes.

Instead, both supported an alternative budget plan, which did not raise taxes and protected our most vulnerable residents. For more information on that plan, visit http://cthousegop.com/blueprint/ and click on the Blueprint for Prosperity.

Rep. Bolinsky said: “Every year, my family looks forward to Free Week!  I want to be sure everyone knows that, even though this savings opportunity is timed to coincide with ‘Back to School’, purchases are not limited to just school clothes.  This tax holiday is a great time for everyone; individuals, families and senior citizens alike, to pick up the clothing and shoes they need and save an additional 6.35%, in addition to the traditional sales offered at this time of year by local and national retailers and e-tailers.  I regret that the Governor’s budget-writers reduced this great benefit for us working people but, if we shop wisely and split purchase transactions creatively, there’s still the potential to save a nice chunk of change.”

Bolinsky concluded, “I also want to encourage Newtowners to shop and ‘Buy Local’, whenever possible!”
