NEWTOWN- State Rep. Mitch Bolinsky (R-106 Newtown) has been asked to serve as a member of the prestigious Connecticut After-School Advisory Council, representing the state legislature and Newtown.

Bolinsky was recommended by and invited to join the council by long-time member, Tracey Lay, the Director of School Age Programs & Development Services at Education Connection, a leader in After School programming in Northwest Connecticut.

Bolinsky said, “I first met Tracey 13-years ago when our children attended one of Education Connection’s Public School-based After School Programs in Newtown.  As working parents, the program was great and wonderfully convenient because my wife and I both worked outside the home and, having access to a school-based program in our elementary school building eliminated the need for transportation.”

Education Connection in Newtown operates a before- and after-school program for students of Head O’Meadow School. The state-licensed program provides a supervised setting for doing homework, as well as arts and crafts, science projects, computer time, free play, indoor and outdoor games and sports.

The Connecticut After-School Advisory Council is an advisory “think tank” with a diverse cross-section of members intended to recommend policy, follow-up on initiatives and facilitate funding of after school programs.

Formed in 2003 by the legislature, the council’s scope includes a broad set of tasks considered and expected of the statewide afterschool network.  The advisory committee is required to report to the legislature annually and to consider and make recommendations on important aspects affecting afterschool programs. The committee brings the state agencies that fund or are stakeholders of afterschool programs together with the executive branch agencies to work across their own limited program goals and collaborate for greater efficiencies and better outcomes.
