I want to inform you of a state Department of Transportation bridge project that will have significant impact on many of us who travel between Newtown/Sandy Hook and Southbury.  The “Steel Bridge”, also known as the “Silver Bridge”, even though it is now red and rusty, is undergoing a major rehabilitation project that began quietly on April 7th, 2015.

This bridge, which used to carry old Route 6 over the Housatonic River between Glen Road in Newtown/Sandy Hook and River Road in Southbury, is the primary I-84 bypass route for local traffic and commuters.

The project is much needed for our collective safety, and we all need to bear in mind that this vital work will require that we plan a little extra travel time and patience around this coming inconvenience.

Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving in this vicinity.  Please be careful and particularly mindful of workers in and around the site.  “Give ’em a brake.”
