With the possibility of traffic delays on I-84, I wanted to share with you the latest information on two Department of Transportation projects.

First, the state’s Department of Transportation this week started an improvement project that is expected to cause delays along Interstate 84. DOT will reconstruct the interchanges at exits 5 and 6. They’ll also widen a part of Route 37 that often bottlenecks—read more about the project in this report published in the News Times.

Expected traffic impact, according to the News Times report:

    • On I-84, commuters should expect delays Monday through Friday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the eastbound exit 5 off-ramp, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the westbound exit 6 off-ramp, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the westbound exit 5 off-ramp and eastbound exit 6 on-ramp.
    • Drivers on Padanaram Road near exit 6 should expect delays from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
    • North Street and other adjacent roadways may be closed from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
    • On Saturdays and Sundays, work will be limited to 6 p.m. to 10 a.m. on all roadways.

Additionally, a project to widen a stretch of I-84 in Waterbury began last week. The project involves adding a third lane in each direction on the highway between Washington Street (exit 23) and Pierpont Road (exit 25A). This section of I-84 is known for its consistent bottleneck and traffic delays.

According to DOT, the project also includes realigning nearly one mile of the highway near Harpers Ferry Road to eliminate the sharp reverse-curve alignment; the length of the project is close to three miles.

The I-84 night construction is to begin the week of 04/13. The  construction will take place between the hours of 10:00pm and 6:00am. Lane closures will take place and the times will vary.
