NEWTOWN – State Representative Mitch Bolinsky (R-106) addressed the Newtown Rotary Dinner Monday night, speaking on a number of topics, including an update on the legislative session which concluded June 5th.

Rep. Bolinsky talked about his opening session in the Connecticut General Assembly, how the events of December 14th influenced the 2013 legislative session, making like no other; especially for a first-time legislator.

Bolinsky called for both parties to work together and make the tough decisions to address the challenges the state faces.  He stated that the government cannot be allowed to tax without consequence and stressed the importance of government running more business-like during the upcoming session.  He concluded saying that he was elected to represent the people, not a label and looks forward to continuing to honor his commitment to the community.

“I represent you, Newtown. I will fight to make sure Newtown gets its voice heard in Hartford,” said Rep. Bolinsky.

The Newtown Rotary’s mission is to serve the Newtown community. They have 42 members who volunteer and service Newtown. Some of their service includes volunteering their time at the Newtown Youth Services and work with parents to fight drug abuse.  They also volunteer at Danbury’s Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen.

After the events of 12/14, the Newtown Rotary raised about $250K for the Sandy Hook Fund and has distributed about 80% of the proceeds.  They money goes directly to the entity that needs to be paid, whether that be to the doctor or car loan company of an individual or family who was out of work in the days following the December 14th.

The Rotary also volunteers at Kevin’s Community Center which provides free medical services to adults who are uninsured or underinsured and who meet certain income guidelines additionally they help out in the spring with spring cleanups along the shores of some area rivers in town; and they clean up the grounds of the Ability Beyond Disability home in Hawleyville.

Bolinsky mentioned how excited they were to begin the new session and the work that lies ahead.  The 2014-15 legislative session of the Connecticut House of Representatives begins next Wednesday, February 5th.
