I-84 Infrastructure Improvement Updates

Friends and Neighbors,

As you are aware, the DOT has been conducting much needed improvements along I-84 in Newtown and throughout the Greater Danbury area. The I-84 improvements are designed to relieve congestion and improve safety through the Danbury corridor, between Exits 3 and 8. Many fellow Newtown residents that commute, shop, and recreate in Greater Danbury know that this particular stretch of highway is the starting point for many traffic jams.

While this portion of the I-84 Danbury Project does not touch Newtown’s borders, it is important that you are aware that the preliminary designs are starting to take shape. There will be an official meeting of the Project Advisory Committee on Monday, January 29, 2018 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Danbury Police Department.

I will continue to relay updates to you as they become available on this specific project. You can find more information by clicking here. Additionally, I wanted to provide you with update on a related, but different, DOT project that will reconfigure the Exit 11 interchange in Sandy Hook.

Newtown Highway Department’s responsibility for this project, which consists of the construction of a new bridge and turn lanes from Toddy Hill Road to Berkshire Road, resumes this spring and will make way for the Connecticut DOT’s work to commence.

This 2019-2020 state project will reconfigure nearly the entire Exit 11 area, providing Newtown residents a direct Route 34 northbound entrance ramp onto the interstate. Ultimately, this and other Exit 11 area improvements to Wasserman Way, Berkshire Road, Toddy Hill Road and around Newtown High School will make driving in that corridor safer and more convenient for all of us, especially at rush hours and student pick-up/drop-off times.
