On Thursday morning, House Republicans held a news conference to unveil proposals crafted to make Connecticut a more affordable place to live. These proposals can be found within a larger framework called, “Security & Service.” Guiding principles within the set of proposals will help maintain the state’s fiscal stability while seeking to reduce expenses for Connecticut families, businesses, and individuals.

    A More Affordable Connecticut…

Specifically, the plan will make it easier for Connecticut’s families and residents to fight inflation and keep more of their hard-earned dollars in their own pockets. The proposals include the creation of a state child tax deduction of $2,000 per child. Additionally, it calls to exempt children’s clothing under $100 from the state’s sales tax all year long.

    Additional proposals:

    • Reduce the sales tax to 6.35% from 7.75% on motor vehicles valued between $50K and $75k, helping residents adjust to skyrocketing prices
    • Reduce the mandatory paid family leave payroll tax to .4 percent from .5 percent
    • Help small business workers by authorizing establishment of association health care plans

    Fiscal Guardrails…

There will also be a strong focus on maintaining fiscal guardrails that were enacted within the state’s 2017 budget agreement and reaffirmed by a vote in 2023. Now, Democrats are balking at some of these caps because they want to be able to spend more. Increased spending would erase the path to fiscal stability, which is why I will continue to defend these guardrails.

Good principles lead to good gun policy

The June Drummer ran an opinion piece by Michael Fitzgerald questioning my legislative agenda, specifically HB 5717. Fitzgerald cited the Sandy Hook tragedy that led to Connecticut’s restrictive gun laws, and the recent Granby budget that funds a School Resource Officer (SRO). Of course, that a human being reached such a mental state that he murdered 20 […]
