Public Hearing on Key Veteran Legislation

The Veterans’ and Military Affairs Committee will hold a public hearing on Thursday, February 13, 2025 at 11:30 A.M. in Room 1C of the LOB and via Zoom. Item 3 on the agenda, SB 1276, is a proposed fix to the property tax exemption for permanently and totally disabled Veterans. This issue has garnered intense interest from disabled Veterans as well as town government officials. I do believe that the law needs to be clarified and that the exemption is an unfunded mandate on the towns which should be fully reimbursed by the state.

The public hearing can be viewed via YouTube Live.  In addition, the public hearing may be recorded and broadcast live on CT-N.com.  Individuals who wish to testify must register using the On-line Testimony Registration Form. The registration form must contain the name of the person who will be testifying.  A unique email address must be provided for each person registered to speak.  Registration will close on Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at 3:00 P.M.  Speaker order of approved registrants will be listed in a randomized order and posted on the Veterans’ and Military Affairs Committee website.

Please submit written testimony using the On-line Testimony Submission Form.  The Committee requests that testimony be limited to matters related to the items on the Agenda. Speakers will be limited to three minutes of testimony.

Good principles lead to good gun policy

The June Drummer ran an opinion piece by Michael Fitzgerald questioning my legislative agenda, specifically HB 5717. Fitzgerald cited the Sandy Hook tragedy that led to Connecticut’s restrictive gun laws, and the recent Granby budget that funds a School Resource Officer (SRO). Of course, that a human being reached such a mental state that he murdered 20 […]
