Anderson, Republicans Petition for Hearing on Highway Use Tax Repeal

HARTFORD – State Rep. Mark Anderson (R-Granby) joined his Republican colleagues Wednesday to submit a petition, effectively forcing the Finance Committee to consider a proposal that would repeal the Highway Use Tax (HUT). According to Anderson, he and his fellow caucus members collectively submitted 51 signatures to secure a hearing for the concept.
“Affordability is an issue that permeates every community throughout our state. When the state is sitting on excessive piles of taxpayer dollars as a direct result of record inflation, it’s inexplicable that a new revenue stream would be created. Unfortunately, that’s the scenario we are faced with. The good news is that you will be able to tell the legislature how you feel about this tax, despite the committee’s partisan efforts to block the bill from being heard,” said Anderson.
Considering the committee’s potential inaction, Anderson added his name to a petition forcing a public hearing on H.B. 5290, An Act Eliminating the Highway Use Tax. This tax, passed by Democrats in 2021, is levied according to a truck’s weight, classification and number of miles traveled in Connecticut.
It is anticipated that the HUT will bring the state $90 million in new revenue. It was reported, as recently as February 9, that the State Comptroller projects a $1.3 billion surplus for the current fiscal year.
