Case Advocates for the City of Torrington

HARTFORD – State Representative Jay Case (R-Winsted) spoke at a press conference held at the State Capitol on Wednesday, April 25th to raise awareness about state dollars that are owed to the City of Torrington.

“Our local budgets have suffered as a result of the state withholding general aid, making cuts to education dollars, and eliminating much needed services. I have advocated for policies that would hold our municipalities harmless. I am calling for the state to release the supplemental tax dollars owed to the City of Torrington,” explained Case.

As a result of the bipartisan budget passing last year, any municipality that has a mill rate above 39 was to be reimbursed by the state for the supplemental dollars that were lost from the implementation of a state-wide car tax cap.

According to Case, three municipalities have not received full reimbursement. In addition to Torrington, Bridgeport and Hamden have not gotten their full state compensation to date. In total, the state owes an aggregate amount of $5 million to these communities.

Case concluded, “I am supportive of a policy that taxes cars universally, but it’s not fair that only certain cities and towns are being made whole. We have the same needs in Torrington as any other municipality.”
