HARTFORD – House Republican Leader Vincent Candelora on Friday selected State Representative Lezlye Zupkus (R-89th) to take on a new and important role as Ranking Member of the Education Committee for the session that begins on January 8, 2025. A Ranking Member serves as the leader of the minority party in committee meetings and works with the Committee Leadership to bring forward legislation.

“I am honored Representative Candelora has selected me for this role, and I appreciate the faith he has in me,” Rep. Zupkus said. “I’m looking forward to serving on the Education Committee, because, as a mom, I know how important it is for parents to have representation when it comes to laws and policies that will impact their children. I will make sure their voices are heard. We have a lot of work to do to ensure that our children are getting the best quality education available that emphasizes the skills they will need in future careers and later in life.”

“Representative Zupkus is a seasoned legislator and dedicated member of the Education Committee with a passion for improving educational outcomes,” Candelora said. “Her tenacity and commitment to commonsense policymaking will undoubtedly serve Connecticut’s children well. I am confident she will excel in this leadership role, especially at this critical time that has students, parents, and school district personnel working hard to address the learning loss caused by decisions made during the pandemic.”

The Education Committee has cognizance of all matters relating to the Department of Education, the Office of Early Childhood and the Technical Education and Career System, and school building projects, local and regional boards of education, laws covering collective bargaining for teachers and professional employees of such boards, vocational rehabilitation, and libraries, including the State Library, museums and historical and cultural associations.

Ranking Members also serve as a liaison to caucus members regarding the important issues from each committee.
