Zupkus: Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans

HARTFORD- State Rep. Lezlye Zupkus (R-89) along with other state lawmakers, the Connecticut Commissioner of the Department of Veterans Affairs, and Vietnam Veterans throughout the state celebrated “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day” on March 30th at a State Capitol ceremony. Zupkus was joined by Prospect resident and Army veteran service member, Bob Albert. Albert served during the Vietnam War in the 281st Assault Helicopter Company (AHC), which was the first US Army Helicopter Company organized and trained as a Special Operations Aviation unit in the Republic of Vietnam.
“Today we remember all veterans who served in the Vietnam War and we honor their sacrifice and service to our country,” Zupkus said. “It was an honor to have Mr. Bob Albert with me at this ceremony. I am grateful to him and to all of those who’ve served in our Armed Forces and I am proud to be a part of this celebration and display of gratitude, which our Vietnam Veterans are truly deserving of.”
Vietnam Veterans Day commemorates the sacrifices of Vietnam veterans and their families and is part of a national effort to recognize the men and women who were denied a proper welcome upon returning home more than 40 years ago.
On March 30th in 1973, the last combat troops were withdrawn from Vietnam and the last prisoners of war held in North Vietnam arrived on American soil. It is also the date President Nixon chose for the first Vietnam Veterans Day in 1974.
In 2010, the state legislature proclaimed March 30 of every year as Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day “to commemorate and honor the return home of the members of the armed forces who served in Vietnam.”
