Hartford –Representative Lezlye Zupkus (R-Prospect, Cheshire, Bethany) hosted the Commissioner of the State Department on Aging, Elizabeth Ritter, as guest speaker at the Prospect Senior Center last week.  Both Representative Zupkus and Commissioner Ritter spoke with the seniors about current legislation and budget issues affecting seniors.

“A lot of good discussion was had today about the issues facing seniors,” said Zupkus.  “It is important that we continue the dialogue so that we can be responsive to the needs of our senior residents.  We need to ensure that we are providing them with the most current information about issues facing the elderly and the resources that are available so that they can make informed decisions about things that matter to them.  I am glad that this forum provided the opportunity for that discussion and I thank Commissioner Ritter for attending.  There is much work to be done.”

Much of the discussion centered on senior housing, probate and estate planning, and concerns with Medicare.  Residents also discussed the gaps in coverage for seniors who qualify for both Medicaid and Medicare.

The 2015 Legislative Session will adjourn on June 3rd.
