CHESHIRE — State Rep. Lezlye Zupkus was among many people at the Town Green recently to lend a hand to local families in need by participating in an annual collection of non-perishable food items. The event was organized by the Cheshire Food Drive. The organization, commemorating 40 years of service, has launched its “40/40” campaign with the goal of collecting 40,000 individual food items and, perhaps more important, to raise $40,000 to fund the Food Voucher Program throughout the year. According to Cheshire Food Drive, The Food Voucher Program, administered by the Cheshire Human Services Department, is available to Cheshire residents in need of short-term emergency assistance. Each voucher, worth $40, is redeemable only at town supermarkets – Everybody’s and Stop & Shop. Although the program currently distributes about 720 vouchers a year, there is a growing demand to help more people who have lost jobs, had hours reduced, or are struggling to make ends meet.
