Zupkus Testifies in Support of Veterans

HARTFORD – Last week, State Representative Lezlye Zupkus (R-89a) testified in support of a veterans’ bill that received a public hearing at the State Capitol before the legislature’s Veterans’ Affairs Committee.
The legislation, H.B. 5355, An Act Eliminating Certain Driver’s License Fees for Veterans, would waive the $30 fee for any individual who wishes to indicate his or her status as a veteran with an American flag symbol on a reissued motor vehicle driver’s license or identity card.
“I proudly proposed and testified in favor of this legislation in hopes that it will indicate a show of respect for and solidarity with the men and women of our Armed Forces, who have selflessly and willingly defended our freedom and our great nation,” said Zupkus. “The state should not burden those who have risked their lives on behalf of their country by forcing them to pay a fee to proudly display their Veteran Status. Many of these veterans return home with physical injuries or mental health issues as a result of their service. It is unnecessary and insensitive to expect any of our veterans to have to pay for the flag that they defended to be displayed on their license or ID card.”
The bill awaits further action by the Veterans’ Affairs Committee. Zupkus said she will be following this bill closely and hopes it become law this year.
