CHESHIRE — The legislature’s impact on Connecticut manufacturing was among the topics discussed by state Rep. Lezlye Zupkus and executives of Marion Manufacturing during her recent visit there.

Zupkus, a member of the legislature’s Manufacturing Caucus, toured the Reinhard Road company on Aug. 12 to learn more about the company’s products and workforce as well as the role it plays in the regional economy. She talked to President and Chief Executive Officer Mary Cramer and Vice President of Operations Douglas Johnson, both of whom met with Zupkus during manufacturing day at the Capitol earlier this year.

Together, the executives and state legislator talked about the governor’s “First Five” initiative that’s seen the state forge multi-million-dollar funding agreements with large companies—in some cases just to keep them from moving outside Connecticut’s borders. Conversely, they discussed the more impactful Small Business Express program that’s helped small and midsized companies buy equipment and expand. Tax credits and apprenticeship programs were other topics covered during Zupkus’ two-hour visit.

“This critical piece of Connecticut’s economic landscape has been weakened by legislative policies that have increased costs for smaller companies,” said Zupkus, who represents the 89th General Assembly District. “It’s a fact that too many politicians in Hartford seem to ignore, but it’s one I’m determined to talk about every opportunity I get. These companies, and the people they employ, need their legislature to work alongside them—to roll back regulatory policies that have blocked the growth our state needs.”

The legislature’s Manufacturing Caucus is a relatively new group, and is perhaps the most issued-focus group. Some of its early initiatives include: developing strategies to reduce energy costs; enhanced training for incumbent manufacturing employees; encouraging innovation by helping startups with access research; and increasing and expanding apprenticeship opportunities in key manufacturing occupations.

Zupkus will continue her tour district-wide business tour ahead of the 2014 legislative session, when her economy-focused work as a member of the legislature’s Commerce Committee resumes.
