Zupkus: Public Hearing on Proposed Tax Increase 5/11

Zupkus: Public Hearing on Proposed Tax Increase 5/11

The majority party Democrats, who control the legislature’s Finance, Revenue and Bonding committee, passed a tax package (Senate bill 946) out of committee which raises the state’s sales tax and increases income taxes on Connecticut residents by $1.8 billion.

I oppose this plan to raise taxes!

The Democrats chose to push these tax increases through without any public input.  The result of this was that state residents did not get an opportunity to offer comments about how these proposed tax increases would impact them, their business, or their employer.

While Republican members voted against the plan, they still want to hear from the people.

On May 1st, Republican leaders asked the leadership of the Finance committee to hold a public hearing and were ignored. Therefore Republican members of the Finance, Revenue and Bonding committee will be holding a public hearing for any resident or business owner who wishes to attend and voice their views regarding these proposed tax increases.

To view the letter written to the House and Senate Democratic leaders, which includes the list of taxes that did not have a public hearing, click here.

The Republican public hearing on the proposed tax increases will be Monday, May 11th at 1:30pm in room 1E of the Legislative Office Building.
