Zupkus named MADD Public Policy ‘Community Champion’

State Rep. Lezlye Zupkus has been recognized statewide by the advocacy group Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for her outstanding commitment to promoting safe and sober driving through legislation. The state lawmaker has supported concepts strengthening intoxicated driving laws, and because of her continued support, will be decorated with MADD’s Public Policy Award during a ceremony this fall. Under a 2014 proposal co-sponsored by Zupkus, anyone charged with DUI with children present would have faced a felony risk of injury.
“It’s an honor to have my efforts recognized by an organization such as MADD Connecticut, which itself has played a vital role in making our roads safer,” said Zupkus, who represents the 89th District that includes Prospect and Bethany as well as parts of Cheshire. “For most people, deciding to do something such as driving drunk with kids in the car is simply incomprehensible. Still, it happens all too often—signaling the need for more work in bolstering our laws while educating residents about the dangers of mixing alcohol and driving.”
Zupkus joined MADD in advocating for safe, sober driving during the holiday season – the nationally-recognized “Tie One On For Safety” campaign.
