BETHANY — State Rep. Lezlye Zupkus was among the participants in a Veterans Day ceremony at Town Hall. Check out this report published recently in the New Haven Register:
Students from the Bethany Community School along with the Bethany Beletzky-Hoppe VFW Post 2448 conducted a Veterans Day ceremony at the Town Hall monument to mark the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice which ended WWI in 1918.
Kindergarteners through third-grade students got the opportunity to learn a lot about veterans and why America celebrates Veterans Day during a presentation from veterans Ken Hallstrom, Delores Deer and Charles Deer.
As a community outreach program, third- and sixth-graders handwrote thank you letters to a specific Bethany veteran.
The students sent out 275 letters to registered veterans thanking them for the sacrifices they made to keep the United States free. Many veterans responded in return by sending letters and mementos.
Harlan Q Stevenson , a world war II veteran, visited with third-grader Ryleigh Sousa, to personally thank her for the touching letter she wrote to him.
In attendance was Bethany First Selectman Derrylyn Gorski, and state Rep. Lezlye Zupkus, R-89. The Rev. Canon K. Dexter Cheney delivered the Prayer of Remembrance and Benediction. The Honor Guard from the VFW Post 2448 also participated in honoring veterans.
