Zupkus Defends Taxpayers in Finance Public Hearing

(HARTFORD) — On Monday, State Representative Lezlye Zupkus (R-89) heard testimony in support of Senate Bill 981: An Act Concerning Revenue Items to Implement the Governor’s Budget during a public hearing on the Finance, Revenue, & Bonding Committee. Following one testimony, Zupkus questioned recommendations to implement higher taxes on wealthier residents which would serve to support low- and middle-income families and taxpayers.
In her response, as seen in the video link below, Zupkus defends her district’s residents by outlining the significant negative outcomes a wealth tax could have on her predominantly blue collar communities and families. S.B. 981 would also limit tax cuts on low- and middle-income families which was another concerns expressed by Zupkus.
“I see your comments as ‘Tax the Rich”, said Zupkus during the Q&A. “We have people in my district that might possibly benefit from this, but they would also be doing all the paying. I get calls all the time of people who are struggling to pay their bills and for those who are working hard to make ends meet, this would affect them tremendously.”
“Rich people can afford to leave and they will leave,” added Zupkus. “What happens when the wealthy leave our state? It’s irresponsible to consider replacing the revenue from residents who have left our state with increased rates on the backbone of our state: the middle class.”
