Hartford-State Senator Joe Markley and State Representatives Lezlye Zupkus and Al Adinolfi held a town hall meeting Thursday May 5th with constituents at the Cheshire Town Hall. The event was well attended. The legislators updated the attendees on the status of the state budget and the legislative session which concluded the night before.

“I enjoyed getting a chance to engage with the people of Cheshire,” said Senator Markley. “They are naturally concerned about the economy in Connecticut and the condition of the state budget—concerns I share. The budget under consideration by the Governor and the Democrat majority cuts in the wrong places, and does not make the long term structural changes to government that our state needs to provide stability for the future.”

“It is evident by the comments from residents tonight that people are frustrated and worried about the direction this state is headed in,” said Representative Zupkus.  “I understand and echo their concerns; the state budget is the most important and critical issue that the legislature should have been focused on during this legislative session. It is unfortunate that the majority-party Democrats and the governor were unable to produce a viable budget for the state of Connecticut that would provide predictable stability for our residents and our businesses. The legislature will now look forward to doing the budget work that should have been done during regular session in a special session.”

“The majority party ending the session without closing the budget-shortfall is unacceptable to the people of Connecticut,” explained Representative Adinolfi. “We have continually asked the majority party to not wait until the final days to pass a budget. Our tax base is eroding, and we need to make meaningful long-term changes such as requiring the General Assembly to vote on union contracts, implementing a spending cap and bonding cap, and providing municipal mandate relief that so many towns and cities crave. Our constituents deserve sustainability and predictability, and making these long-term changes will benefit everyone.”
