Zupkus Applauds Prospect Clean Energy Community Award

Hartford –Representative Lezlye Zupkus (R-Prospect, Cheshire, Bethany) was in attendance at the Clean Energy Communities Award Ceremony applauding Prospect’s achievement in reducing their carbon footprint. The Town of Prospect was recognized as a Bronze-level recipient by CEC program administrators.
“I’m very proud of the Town of Prospect for achieving this recognition,” said Zupkus. “Mayor Bob Chatfield and his team have worked diligently to implement programs and measures to realize energy savings through efficiency. I congratulate them on their hard work, continued focus and vision for the future of Prospect.”
More than 145 Connecticut municipalities were honored during the event, for their participation in the nationally-recognized Clean Energy Communities program, an Energize Connecticut initiative that incentivizes cities and towns to support energy efficiency and renewable energy. Under the CEC program, municipalities sign a pledge to reduce municipal building energy consumption by 20 percent by 2018, and to voluntarily support 20 percent of its municipal electric needs from renewable sources by 2018.
Prospect’s accomplishments to date include:
– Used $5,000 Bright Idea Grant to replace exterior lighting with new, high-efficiency LED lighting at Town Buildings
– 430 (13%) homes have participated in residential programs
– 39 (10%) business and municipal energy-saving projects have been completed
The ceremony was highlighted by keynote speaker Lynne Hamjian, the deputy director of the office of ecosystem protection for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) New England. Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) Commissioner Robert Klee was also in attendance to congratulate the participants.
Also in attendance to honor these outstanding communities were David McHale from Eversource, Patrick McDonnell from The United Illuminating Company and Bryan Garcia from the Connecticut Green Bank.
