WATERBURY – As part of continuing education about state government, Deputy House Republican Leader Lezlye Zupkus, R-Prospect, met with middle and high school students at the Boys & Girl Club of Greater Waterbury who are working on a civics-and-advocacy project.

As part of that discussion, the group spoke a bit about icons who are important to them, including Martin Luther King Jr. and four-time Olympic champion, Jesse Owens. The students are planning to present their project in February and have spoken with several area lawmakers as they gather their research.
“These kids were engaged, were asking questions and I shared with them the basics of the legislative process,” Rep. Zupkus said. “When I ran to become a legislator, I wanted to make our state better and help our residents be the best they can be. My hope is that by sharing my story, it helps one of these students on their path to become one of our future leaders.”
